What is green toning? Green toning laser is a unique solution for deep and superficial pigmentation. By combining QS NdYAG and QS KTP we can break down brown pigment spots on the face and body and manage melasma. Green Toning also helps improve texture, tone and luminosity of the skin. There is no downtime but the skin may look flushed for an hour or so following the treatment.
Laser treatments are suitable for skin that has been prepped with cosmeceutical skin care and skin that is tolerating vitamin A serums well. One of our dermal clinicians will assess your skin prior to treatment and devise a plan. Preparing the skin prior to laser ensures that the skin is well hydrated and as healthy as possible in order to achieve the best results for you.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Green Toning uses our Fotona QX MAX, using two separate laser treatments in one – QS Nd:YAG 1064 nm and QS KTP 535nm.
Green Toning is a non ablative laser treatment that combines two different wavelengths to target both dermal and epidermal pigmentation. It’s a great treatment solution for melasma pigmentation and general freckling or pigmentation. Green Toning is an ideal treatment for anyone who wants to avoid significant downtime but still wants to see good results.Green Toning can be combined with Mela Peels, Skin Tightening or 4D laser.
Green toning uses Q-switch NdYAG and Q-Switch KTP laser which delivers a short sharp shock of energy into the skin using a nanosecond pulse. This creates a photo acoustic response to pigment following which the body’s lymphatic system cleans away the pigment particles. This is the same technology that has been used for tattoo removal for many years. The reason this is so effective for melasma is because it doesn’t deliver much heat to the skin, ensuring the pigment cells aren’t stimulated. This is also what makes the treatment safe for darker skin.
Laser works by targeting specific chromophores in the skin (target points) and for Green Toning, we are able to target the pigmentation with our NdYAG 1064nm, and the haemoglobin with the KTP 532nm. We find this effective because generally melasma will have a vasodilation component, so the combined modality approach addresses both blood and pigment- superficially and dermally.
Green Toning is our treatment of choice for any melasma or dermal pigmentation. Its unique ability to deliver a high fluence energy without heat or destruction of the skin makes it a safe and effective solution. We commonly utilise Green Toning for post inflammatory pigmentation (PIH), which can be caused by trauma such as cuts, burns, grazes or general sores, creating an adverse blemish on the skin.
Green Toning is ideal for treatment of all skin types due to its revolutionary delivery of nanosecond pulse durations.
Green Toning is also a favoured treatment for patients wanting to correct larger areas of pigment such as the décolletage, shoulders and arms.
Complications with Green Toning are very rare due to the safety of the laser systems and the protocols created at Body Recon. Your therapist will be able to further advise you on the correct pre and post treatment protocols to ensure your skin is well prepared and cared for.
The potential risks associated with all laser treatments are:
• post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation – a brown mark left on the skin after treatment that usually takes some months to fade with the assistance of lightening agents.
• Hypopigmentation – loss of pigmentation in the treated area that can be permanent. This is very rare.
• Prolonged redness – sometimes the redness of the skin can take a longer time to fade than expected.
• Bacterial or viral infection – laser treatments can sometimes trigger herpes simplex outbreaks. Any viral or bacterial infection in a wound created by a laser has the potential for scarring. It is important to let your therapist know if you are prone to cold sores or any other viral condition.
Green toning is an ideal for treatment for anyone suffering with melasma, chloasma, dermal and epidermal pigmentation and is a safer option for darker skin.
For fairer complexions requiring more intensive rejuvenation to treat pre-cancerous lesions, thickened skin, photodamage or general ageing, either 4D laser or TCA peel may be more appropriate. Another unique treatment we have for melasma at Body Recon is our MelaPeels, which can be an effective option in conjunction with laser. MelaPeel works by exfoliating the skin cells with potent pigment specific acids such as Arbutin, Kojic Acid and Salicylic Acid. A combination of these peeling agents with the laser delivering a break down of pigment cells in the dermis provides a solution for troublesome or stubborn pigment.
Clients love that there is no downtime with Green Toning. Generally, the skin stays red for 24-48hrs which can easily be concealed with mineral makeup. The skin can stay warm and a little ‘prickly’ for an hour or so depending on the intensity of the treatment.
Clients who have stronger, more aggressive treatments usually experience redness for longer and may also see fine flaking for a few days. Epidermal pigment lesions may crust and flake. Dermal pigment generally won’t react like this as the breakdown has more to do with the immune response within the skin. For any intensive treatment prior preparation of the skin is a must to ensure, safety and efficacy of the laser.
For Green Toning, sun compliance is imperative both before and after the treatment as tanned skin has a greater tendency to burn with the laser and the skin will remain photosensitised for a few weeks following the treatment.
Homecare is key to ensure the skin cells are turning over correctly and that the melanocyte cells which produce pigment aren’t in overdrive. To correct this we usually recommend a basic skincare routine combining general cleaning and moisturising and corrective agents such as a pigment inhibitor and a vitamin A serum.
Prep and post care is key with all of the treatments we provide at Body Recon. Your technician will be able to advise you on a topical homecare regimen. It is extremely important to care for your skin post treatment as it may be more sensitive initially after Green Toning. You will be provided with a post-care information sheet and it is important to follow these instructions to ensure that the skin is well cared for and protected at all times. General guidelines initially are to avoid any direct sun exposure, to apply only prescribed topical homecare, to avoid exercise for 24 hours and to ensure that the skin remains clean and protected. Sun avoidance is imperative, as the skin will be slightly photosensitised initially after treatment.
Green Toning is our favourite treatment for melasma due to its long-term safety and efficacy. It’s a great treatment for clients who have mild-moderate pigmentation and who don’t want to have anything too intensive or any significant downtime.
As Green Toning doesn’t break the skin, you are able to wear mineral makeup straight after the treatment. It’s advisable to use mineral makeup due to the added SPF and natural ingredients. You should avoid makeup with talc, fragrance, parabens, dyes or any synthetic ingredients that may cause reaction. If you develop reaction or sensitivity wash off the makeup and avoid use.
