ABOUT TWINLIGHT LASER

The collective desire to stay forever young has created an enormous market for anti-ageing treatments. Recent developments in laser technology are now delivering a longer lasting and scientifically proven method of restoring the natural beauty of the skin. Unlike traditional treatments such as dermabrasion and chemical peels, the unique characteristics of laser skin resurfacing allow more accurate control over the treatment process.

TwinLight laser is primarily used for the treatment of scarring, pigmentation problems (including melasma), sun damage and ageing (protein and elastin loss) and for general improvement of skin quality, tone and texture.

Skin resurfacing and rejuvenation treatments can be performed either in ablative modes with an Er:YAG laser or non-ablatively with a Nd:YAG laser, depending on the aesthetic outcome that the patient and practitioner wish to achieve. In addition, ablative and non-ablative treatments can also be combined into a comprehensive anti-ageing treatment, such as Fotona’s TwinLight™ Fractional Rejuvenation system. This is the gold standard in terms of skin rejuvenation and comprises three treatments in one.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Past skin rejuvenation procedures treated large areas of skin, whether aged or not. But with Fotona’s revolutionary TwinLight® Fractional Rejuvenation method, the laser light precisely targets imperfections in the skin, leaving the surrounding healthy skin untouched. The heat from the laser energy stimulates the production of new protein in the dermis, and maintaining the surrounding, untreated skin helps to speed the rejuvenation process.

TwinLight® Fractional Rejuvenation is a simple 3-step procedure optimized to significantly improve skin smoothness and to give it a fresher, healthier look. The deep heating effect of Fotona’s Nd:YAG laser beam helps rejuvenate and stimulate the skin, while the Er:YAG beam helps the body to form new, tighter skin.

Step 1 – Conditioning: An Nd:YAG beam is passed over the surface. This provides a short stimulus to the skin, the second pass penetrates the tissue, causing deep FRAC3® heating, thereby conditioning the skin for an effective fractional treatment therapy.

Step 2 – Fractional therapy: Old, worn-out skin is ablated away by a fractional Er:YAG laser. The precise micro-ablated channels will be replaced with new, tighter and healthy tissue as new skin forms.

Step 3 – Peeling: The skin is ablated with a light, full Er:YAG beam, which finishes the treatment and removes superficial imperfections.

Using fractional light to rejuvenate the skin offers a degree of control and efficacy that allows for highly precise sculpting of the skin, delivering great results. Treatments can extend from light touch-ups to deep protein remodeling, ideal for patients who want drastic rejuvenation effects, but are not inclined towards aggressive surgical or chemical alternatives. This treatment is suitable for all skin types and tones, with minimal patient downtime.

Most patients find the treatment fairly comfortable. With TwinLight laser you feel a heat sensation rather than a pain sensation. To counteract this we apply a topical numbing cream to the treatment area and we also use a cooling device. This machine blows refrigerated air (at -30 degrees C) over the treatment areas during the procedure. This reduces discomfort from the procedure, as well as minimising heat build-up in the skin. We like to avoid using the cooler during the conditioning phase as the greater the stimulation at this stage, the more protein is produced.

After the treatment, it is normal to feel the skin heat up as if sunburnt. Application of a cold compress with a damp face washer will help to reduce this sensation. You will be provided with a post care instruction sheet and it is important to follow your specialist’s advice to ensure that the skin is well cared for and protected at all times.

The great thing about TwinLight laser is that most patients can still go about their normal routine with little worry. You will notice some changes but the majority of these can be covered with a corrective mineral makeup. We don’t advise having a TwinLight treatment in the same week as a special event as this ‘downtime’ will last approximately 7-10 days.

The intensity and duration of side effects depends on the level of the treatment. Redness and swelling usually persist for a few days but can last for longer after more aggressive treatments. There may also be some mild peeling and a crusty appearance that lasts for about a week. How soon and how quickly the skin peels will be different for each individual.

Day 0-2 Inflammation– your skin will be red and feel very dry. You will look and feel as though you have been sunburnt. Some people may experience minor swelling, although this is quite unusual. During this phase the blood vessels dilate and white blood cells migrate to the area to assist with healing.

Day 2-7 Re-epithelialisation– your skin will feel very dry and tight. You may notice that you have micro-crusting which feels quite rough to touch and looks slightly indented in the skin if you were to examine it very closely – this is easy to cover with mineral makeup. After this you will begin to flake and shed for a couple of days. This removal of the dead skin cells is part of the normal healing process. Do not peel away any skin that is not ready to come off on its own. Cell migration and maturation begins as wound healing takes place. The flaking may clear more quickly in some people than in others but usually takes 5-7 days.

Day 7-6 months Remodeling– this starts when the flaking has cleared. The remodeling occurs in the deeper layers of the skin (the papillary and reticulated layers of the dermis) which is where protein production begins. This protein production takes time and it may six months before the full effect of the skin rejuvenation can be seen.

As with any skin rejuvenation, you will be required to prep your skin at home. This is to ensure that we can treat you safely and without complications. The correct preparation will also maximize the results of your treatment by allowing for a more even penetration- you wouldn’t just run a marathon, you need to train first, it is the same with your skin.

At Body Recon we often use at least one prepping peel before TwinLight laser, most commonly a lactobotanical peel to help hydrate and plump the skin. Because the laser absorbs the water in the skin cells, this ensures we get correct cellular turnover rather than just heat accumulation in the skin. This results in removal of pigmentation and discoloration and leaves your skin lovely and soft.

Once the flaking has finished you with notice an improvement in the texture and tone of your skin. It should look lovely and clear but may have a slight pinkness. What we are treating and the intensity of the treatment will determine how quickly your skin will respond. Pigment may become darker and if this is the case, you may require one or more further sessions of TwinLight laser. We should be able to estimate how your pigment will respond from your initial Visia Skin Analysis. If we are treating ageing (protein or elastin loss) it may take up to six months to see the final result as it takes time to produce new protein.

It really depends on what we are treating as to how many treatments you will require. Often for more superficial pigment, only one treatment is required. For deeper damage we will often perform a course of 3 treatments spaced approximately 4 weeks apart and then reassess. Another factor may be the length and severity of downtime that you are prepared to put up with. Many patients may prefer not to have any downtime after treatments, in which case we may opt to do more sessions of lighter TwinLight. The great thing is that we are able to tailor your treatments to both your skin and your lifestyle. For optimal maintenance of your results from the TwinLight laser it may be beneficial to have a further treatment once or twice a year or perhaps a superficial chemical peel. Your skin will continue to improve for months following TwinLight treatment. We often have patients reporting that they notice the biggest change six months on from their session, with friends and family commenting on how great they look. Pigment conditions will require ongoing maintenance as the skin will continue to produce pigmentation. Where this is a concern, a further session in Autumn/Winter each year may be recommended to reduce pigmentation and discoloration caused by the harsh Australian sun over summer.

The first step in TwinLight treatment is for one of our clinicians to assess your skin’s suitability for the treatment. Not all skin conditions and skin types are suitable, or there may be another laser that is more suited to your concerns. At Body Recon, all patients who want any form of skin rejuvenation will receive a Visia Skin Analysis. Visia will be used to record results of your treatments and to provide us before and after photos. Visia is important because it will identify different skin conditions and allow us to assess all the aspects of your skin- vascularity, elasticity, UV damage, depth of pigment, pores etc. This is extremely important in helping us to correctly determine what treatment plan is best for you as well as providing you with detailed information and data on any recommended services. We are able to discuss in more detail what the treatment involves and establish your skin goals and what you hope to achieve from any or all treatments.

Your technician will be able to advise you on a topical home care regime. It is extremely important to care for your skin correctly post treatment as your skin will be very sensitive initially. It is important to follow your post care instruction sheet to ensure the skin is well cared for and protected at all times. General considerations initially are to avoid direct sun exposure; avoid picking at the skin; to apply only prescribed topical home care; to avoid exercise for 24 hours and to ensure that the skin remains clean and protected at all times.

Our prices are very competitive. What we usually do is to tailor a treatment package for you that may include prep and post care and multiple treatments for a heavily discounted rate. If you are interested in having a treatment package drawn up then this is done at the time of your Visia skin analysis.

Again, it really is about treating the individual so what’s right for your mum, best friend or sister might not be right for you. Our specialists will be able to accurately devise the right treatment plan for YOU. TwinLight is the gold standard with Skin Rejuvenation as we are targeting all layers of the skin; it is effective in the treatment of ageing, scarring, pigmentation, pores, texture and tone. The depth of damage in your skin as well as the type of results you hope to achieve will determine if Twinlight is a suitable treatment option.
