What is Onchomycosis?
Onychomycosis is a fungal nail infection that affects the toenails or fingernails. It commonly presents as thickened, discoloured, brittle or lifting nails. Often referred to as nail fungus, toenail fungus, or fungal toenail infection. Onychomycosis develops when dermatophytes, yeasts or moulds invade the nail plate and nail bed.Fungal nail infections can be persistent and may worsen over time without appropriate management.
How treatment works
Onychomycosis is treated using Nd:YAG laser treatment (1064nm Nd:YAG laser) — a non-invasive option for laser nail fungus treatment.
The Nd:YAG laser works by delivering a 1064nm wavelength energy that penetrate through the nail plate into the nail bed. The laser energy is absorbed and converted into heat, creating a controlled thermal effect that disrupts fungal cells and inhibits fungal growth. This selective heating targets the fungal organisms while preserving surrounding healthy tissue. Unlike topical therapies, the 1064nm wavelength allows deeper penetration, making it suitable for laser treatment of toenail fungus where the infection involves the nail bed. Laser therapy is often combined with appropriate topical or oral antifungal management where indicated to optimise outcomes.
