ABOUT SKINPEN - SKIN NEEDLING
SkinPen is a micro-needling system also known as CIT (collagen induction therapy) that helps to reduce the signs of ageing, improve the appearance of acne scars, large pores, uneven skin texture, pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles.
The SkinPen micro-needling device is the only medical grade needling device that is TGA (Therapeutic goods administration of Australia) approved in Australia. The needling device heads are all single use with a lockout feature, making them safe and hygienic.
Micro-needling creates thousands of micro-injuries in the skin to trigger the body’s natural wound healing process. This assists the promotion of collagen and elastin, these two proteins makeup the skins scaffolding and extremely important for youthful looking skin.
Skin pen treatment can be performed all year round with no risk of treating over the sunny months, unlike laser treatments. It can also be performed on all skin types from fair to dark skins and all body areas including face, neck, décolletage, hands and stretch marks on the body.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Virtually anyone can have the SkinPen needling treatment as it is great for general rejuvenation. Many people are having CIT (collagen induction therapy) as a preventative method for anti-ageing purposes in their late twenties and early thirties.
SkinPen can be beneficial for many skin concerns including:
– Ageing- skin laxity, fine lines and wrinkles and sagging.
– Pigmentation- hyperpigmentation on the skin including melasma (a type of hormonal pigment)
– Scarring- acne, post-surgical scars and stretch marks
– Enlarged pores
– Redness/rosacea
For clients who we are treating for rejuvenation purposes we would normally recommend starting with a course of three skin needling sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart to achieve optimal results. Some clients may require more treatments, for example those with more severe indications such as deep acne scarring. However we do find most clients love the way their skin looks and feels even after their first treatment.
The treatment itself takes around 30 minutes. We also apply a tropical numbing cream to the skin 20 minutes before the treatment. Allow one hour from start to finish.
We use a very high strength topical numbing cream that makes the procedure virtually pain free. Most clients only feeling a light vibration on the skin that is no more painful than a microdermabrasion.
The needling handpiece glides over the surface of the skin with a gel.
Contraindications for this treatment include:
– Pregnancy and breast feeding
– Open wounds or lesions including active acne breakouts
– Clients who have been taking Roaccutane (6 months after finishing dose)
Precautions:
– It is advisable to cease the use of topical vitamin A (retinol) products for 3 days prior and 7 days post treatment.
– Avoid taking fish oil orally a few days prior to treatment.
Initially post treatment your skin will be slightly red like you have had a little too much sun, this normally lasts for around 24 hours with it being worst during the initial hour following treatment. Most people find that the redness has calmed down significantly by the following day and are able to wear a light makeup to cover any residual redness. At day 3-4 slight dryness and flaking may occur and at this stage we would advise doing some light exfoliation with “fruit enzymes” an Aspect Dr product that we sell in the clinics. We would advise not to exercise or use a sauna for 24 hours following the treatment.
